Introduction
The role of a Direct Support Practitioner (DSP) is central to ensuring dignity, independence, and
wellbeing for persons with disabilities. This 2-day workshop aimed to provide participants with a
deeper understanding of disability, the principles of direct support services, and the skills needed to
promote inclusion, empowerment, and advocacy.
The sessions combined lectures, group discussions, role plays, and reflection exercises, giving
participants both theoretical and practical exposure.
The parents and staff of 60 participants attended the workshop.
The workshop proved to be highly impactful in shaping ethical, empathetic, and professional Direct
Support Practitioners. It reminded participants that their role is not merely caregiving, but also
empowerment, advocacy, and creating inclusive societies.
As one reflection highlighted:
“Disability is not a limitation, but a variation of human diversity. With the right support, every person can trive
